introduction to audio media
First of all, what is audio? Audio comes from the Latin word audire (to hear). According to Merriam-Webster, usually pertains to sound that is within the range of human hearing = 15 – 20,000 Hz
What is Hz? Hz, short for Hertz, is a measure of the highness or lowness of a sound, in other words, pitch; the higher the hertz, the higher the pitch, and vice-versa. Pitch is one of the three characteristics of sound.
Another defining characteristic of sound is loudness, measured in decibels (dB), named after the scientists Alexander Graham Bell. The usual human hearing range goes from 0 dB to 130 dB, at which point the loudness is damaging to the ear.
The third characteristic of sound is duration, or how long a sound can be measured in units of time like seconds, minutes, hours, etc.
